Eight million metric tons: That’s how much plastic experts estimate we dump into the oceans each year. That’s about 17.6 billion pounds. By 2050, researchers predict that ocean plastic will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish. Fortunately, small efforts make a huge impact on our coastlines.
Each summer, members of AMC and their families join together to pick up trash and help keep our local beaches clean. While we are disappointed we can’t join together this in one location year, we want you to join us wherever you are with your own cleanup efforts on July 25 or anytime during the month of July! Here’s what you need to know about gathering and what to bring with you.
Small in Numbers but Big in Results
With COVID-19 guidelines still in place, your cleanup crew might be small this year, with just your roommates or immediate family members lending a hand. But if you’re inviting friends or extended family to join you in your cleanup, follow this CDC advice: “When guests arrive, minimize gestures that promote close contact. For example, don’t shake hands, do elbow bumps, or give hugs. Instead wave and verbally greet them.”
And in keeping with California’s mask mandate, wear your mask “when maintaining a physical distance of 6 feet from persons who are not members of the same household or residence is not feasible.”
Cleanup Checklist
Once you’ve circled July 25 on your calendar or picked the day that works best for you, it’s time to gather supplies for your cleanup. On top of a reusable water bottle and quick-energy snacks, add these supplies to your list:
- Trash bags
- Paper lawn and refuse bags for yard waste
- Gloves
- Brooms, dustpans, and buckets for cigarette butts and glass
- First aid kit
Cleaning up beaches and parks really makes a difference and is a fun and memorable summer activity. When taking photos of the event, be sure to tag Northwind Apartment Homes in your photos and use the hashtags #AMCcleanup and #livehappy. We can’t wait to see the difference you are making!
